INTRODUCTION TO ROCHEFORT EN TERRE
Rochefort en Terre, one of the most famous village in Brittany, and also one of the smallest (121 ha only).
Rochefort en Terre is a collection of several hundred houses set on an outcrop of schist. It is a picturesque and defensive site between the Brocéliande Forest, Malestroit and la Roche Bernard.
If you stroll through the town, you will be marked by a great impression of simplicity and unity. due to architecture, and displays of geraniums, which add to the attractive ness of the main street. However, when you look slightly closer, especially at night, you will be impressed by the great diversity of Rochefort en Terre, thanks to the illuminations called "Chemins Lumineux".
The main architectural styles are represented here in a reducted place: timbered houses and Gothic buildings are mixed with Renaissance houses, classical hotels as well as the 19th century eclectic art.
So many ideas, so many original details in the façades (granite facings on a schist housing, stone corbelled construction, alternation of granite and schist) as well as in the decoration of the skylight’s pediment and of the windows and door lintels!
So many alleys and stairways open onto secret dwellings or on magnificent panoramas. The quality of the architectural patrimony can be explained by the power and the wealth of the Lords who lived in Rochefort en Terre, and also by the aesthetic taste of the former owner of the castle – the American painter Klots – who developed a floral decoration of great quality. The town has been awarded with a "4th flower" at the Flowered Towns and Villages National Competition, helping Rochefort en Terre to become a "Petite Cité de Caractère" in the heart of the Brittany. |
